Origins and Early History
The story of Harry P. Leu Gardens begins with Harry P. Leu, a prominent businessman, citrus grower, and horticultural enthusiast in Orlando during the early 20th century. Born in the late 1800s, Leu developed a profound interest in plants and gardening, influenced by Florida’s subtropical climate and diverse flora. He acquired property along the scenic Lake Rowena, envisioning a space where ornamental and exotic plants could be cultivated and displayed in a harmonious, natural setting.
Leu’s original estate included a residence, orchards, and extensive gardens featuring native and non-native species. Throughout his lifetime, he dedicated significant resources to expanding plant collections, experimenting with horticultural techniques, and integrating design principles that balanced aesthetics with ecological function.
After Harry P. Leu’s passing, his family generously donated the estate and gardens to the city of Orlando in 1961, establishing Harry P. Leu Gardens as a public institution. This donation laid the foundation for a botanical garden that combined horticultural excellence, historical preservation, and public engagement. shutdown123
